• Dutch, Greek, Hindi, Persian and much more, Dictionariez V7.1.0

    Hello everyone,

Just a few days after the major release of v7.0, I am back with another update! Dictionariez v7.1.0 is now available, and it is all about breaking language barriers.

    🌍 4 New Languages Supported

I heard your feedback loud and clear. You wanted more languages, and I am delivering. This version adds native support for 4 new languages:

    🇳🇱 Dutch 🇬🇷 Greek 🇮🇳 Hindi 🇮🇷 Persian (Farsi)

This means you can now double-click words in these languages to get instant definitions, pronunciations, and translations. For Persian, I have ensured full Right-to-Left (RTL) support for a seamless reading experience.

    🎯 Smarter English Lookup

English is a language that loves to borrow words. Words like café, détente, naïve, or jalapeño are common in English texts but often tripped up the dictionary because of their accents.

In v7.1, I have improved the detection engine. Dictionariez now smartly recognizes these accented words as English when you are reading in an English context, ensuring you get the correct definition without switching languages manually.

    📚 Better Definitions for Polyglots

For learners of German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and French, I have tweaked the engine to prioritize Wiktionary results. Previously, Google Dictionary provided definitions in the target language (e.g., German definitions for German words), which could be challenging for beginners. Wiktionary results often include definitions in English, making it much easier to understand the meaning while you are still mastering the language. Don't worry though, if Wiktionary comes up empty, it seamlessly falls back to Google Dictionary to ensure you always get a result.

    🛠️ Robust & Reliable

I have also added a suite of new automated tests to ensure these new features work perfectly and don't break existing ones. This makes Dictionariez more stable and reliable than ever.

It's now already available on Firefox, and needs a few more days for review on Chrome webstore and Edge addons. Stay tuned!
Update to v7.1.0 asap and keep exploring the world of languages!

    Happy Learning,
    River

  • Dictionariez/Ordböcker v7.0: A New Milestone in AI-Powered Language Learning

    Screenshot 2025-12-30 201201.png
Happy new year everyone. I am so so thrilled to announce the release of Dictionariez v7.0.0, a major milestone that transforms how you interact with new words and languages on the web. This version brings the power of AI directly to your fingertips, along with significant improvements to usability, performance, and the popular Anki integration.

Here is what’s new in Dictionariez v7.0.

🤖 AI Lookup: Context is the King

The absolute star of this release is the new AI Lookup feature. Traditional dictionaries are great, but they often lack context. With AI Lookup, when you click on a word, you don't just get a static definition. You get:

Contextual Explanations: Definitions tailored to how the word is used in the specific sentence you are reading. Rich Details: Synonyms, antonyms, and usage examples generated instantly. Smart Pronunciations: AI-powered pronunciation guides.

I know you come from all over the world, so I’ve added a Response Language Setting. You can now configure the AI to explain words in your native language, making learning even more efficient. For instance, if you are learning Swedish, you can set the response language to German to get definitions and examples explained in German.

    Screenshot 2025-12-30 215932.png

It also fully supports Right-to-Left (RTL) languages; if you choose Arabic or Persian, the result will automatically be displayed in the correct RTL format.

    Screenshot 2025-12-30 220347.png

⚡ Enhanced Workflow & Anki Integration

I have supercharged the lookup bubble to be your command center. The new toolbar offers quick actions to streamline your study flow:

Switch Lookup Modes: Easily toggle between standard Dictionary Lookup and AI Lookup. Comparing results helps you get the most accurate understanding. Always be critical! One-Click Anki Export: Save words to your Anki decks directly from the lookup bubble or the main app window. (I know some of you have been waiting for this for a long time, I am very happy to say it's finally delivered.) Quick App Access: Open the full dictionary app instantly. Pro Settings: Jump straight to configuration to tweak your experience. ✍️ "Help Me Refine" for Writers

Dictionariez isn't just for reading anymore. I've added a "Help Me Refine" button that appears when you select text in editable fields (like text areas or input boxes). Use it to polish your writing, check grammar, or find better vocabulary on the fly.

    📱 Optimized for Every Screen

I have significantly improved the user interface for smaller screens, such as the MacBook Air and mobile devices:

Responsive Bubble: The lookup bubble now positions itself intelligently to stay visible and accessible. Compact TTS & Translator: The Text-to-Speech player and Translator UI have been optimized to take up less space while remaining easy to use. Volume Control: Also fixed some sensitivity issue for smoother audio adjustment, it was very annoying :D. 🚀 Performance & Usability

Under the hood, v7.0 is faster and smoother:

Smart Caching: Recent lookups are cached, making repeated queries instant. Phrase Support: You can now look up phrases containing spaces and hyphens more accurately. Default Selection Lookup: Simply selecting text now triggers a lookup by default, saving you a click. Meta Key Highlighting: Hold the Meta (Command/Windows) key to instantly highlight words in color. 💎 Try AI Lookup Pro - 65% OFF!

AI Lookup is a premium feature designed for serious learners, but I want everyone to experience the magic. That is why I have gifted 100 free AI lookups to all users! Give it a spin and see how it transforms your reading.

Ready to unlock unlimited power? I am running a special Christmas & New Year Deal with 65% OFF for a limited time only.

    🗣️ I Want Your Feedback

AI Lookup is a brand-new frontier for me, and I am just getting started. I would love to hear from you:

What other languages would you like me to support? What other AI-powered features would help your learning?

Note: As with all AI technologies, results can sometimes be inaccurate or "hallucinate." Please always take the AI results with a pinch of salt.

    Update!

Dictionariez v7.0 is available already on Firefox, and under Review on Edge and Chrome. Update your extension to experience the future of dictionary lookups!

    Happy Learning!

  • Captionz update: YouTube shortcuts support for better video experience

YouTube Keyboard Shortcuts That’ll Change Your Life

You’re watching a two-hour coding tutorial and keep pausing to take notes.
Click pause, jot something down, click play, miss the next part, rewind... your mouse is exhausted and your focus is gone.

Then you discover YouTube’s keyboard shortcuts.

The essential shortcuts Playback Space or K — Play / Pause J — Rewind 10 seconds L — Fast-forward 10 seconds ← / → — Rewind / Fast-forward 5 seconds Audio M — Mute / Unmute ↑ / ↓ — Volume up / down Quick navigation 0–9 — Jump to 0%–90% of the video Fullscreen F — Fullscreen with captionz on the right side, but if you focus on the youtube embeded player, then only the YouTube player in fullscreen. Why it matters

These shortcuts keep you in the zone — whether you’re studying, binge-watching, or skipping sponsor segments. Your hands stay on the keyboard, and your focus stays on the content.

Once you start using J and L for 10-second jumps, there’s no going back — simple, obvious, essential.

Give them a try. Your mouse hand will thank you.

  • Just got a big donation from an admirable man for my open-source projects - River的博客 | River's Blog

Hello everyone. Today when I got up my Gmail and Twitter both notified me that I have got a donation. And it’s not just a cup of coffee. It turns out to be a whole bunch of coffees...

  • Welcome to captionz trove.

Hi everyone. Happy new year! Welcome to Captionz Trove, a space dedicated to new & educational YouTube videos. Why? Because it's fun.

But first, have you read this topic: Welcome to pnlpal? This is the one that introduce to you the reason why I built this site, the intention of making it and the rules of posting. I suggest you read it first.

    What is Captionz?

It’s a website, part of our pnlpal community that let you watch YouTube videos with dual captions, A-B repeat and more. just open Captionz to use it. No need to use a browser extension, or an app. It’s simple and straight-forward, right?

I actually launched it at LanguageLearning subreddit first, it's fairly good.
    screenshot of reddit

Later, I put it on InternetIsBeautiful, it soared.
    screenshot of reddit

But then comes the down turn. People loved it and forget it.
    screenshot

Anyway, I put the detail story here:
Captionz: learn on YouTube with fun.

Since you are here reading this post, you actually like it. I appreciate that.

    Let's continue.

    What's Captionz Trove?

Well, it's just a category on pnlpal. After published Captionz, I built this to help us share and discover educational videos on YouTube. It's bit of hard to dig resources on YouTube these days. YouTube is more and more entertaining rather than educational I think. So by creating this place, I hope it could help you reduce some noise, and discover educational videos more easily, and learn languages more efficient.

The core function of this trove is that first, it has a Reddit like ranking algorithm to sort the topics. So it relies on real human upvotes and suggestions. What is the reddit ranking algorithm like? There is a good article writing about this:

    How Reddit ranking algorithms work.
(Though I have to confess that I am still working on it. It needs a lot of posts to see the real effect. There are not many posts now anyway. But you should see it soon.)

Second, a Twitter like UI, so it looks clean. I love twitter so much that you can see me there every day. Let's connected there, shall we?

It's meaningful, isn't it? I watched most of the videos in the trove. Hell, I think I am addicted to YouTube. When I find a video that is interesting and thoughtful, I share it. I have really learned a lot from these videos. For example:

How to learn any language in six months | Chris Lonsdale | TEDxLingnanUniversity The Myth of Education & Impact: Inner Architecture Mini Lockdown math

That's why I built this place. I urge you to do the same with me. Share the video that you watched and learned. So you are not just helping me, but also helping every language learners out here, and even the youtubers! You are spreading works and ideas worth spreading.

    How?

Simple, click the New Topic button. Put the title and url of the video in, and write a few words for introduction.

    screenshot

Don't forget to use or create a few tags. They are meaningful to classify these posts.

Again, before you post, a few simple rules you should know.

Rules General rules I mentioned here, you know no bullshit, no propaganda, looking for original etc. New & educational videos only. I don't want this space full of entertainment. Though you might think that entertainment is also educational, you can learn languages from videos like games or sports. But that's just another YouTube.com. But I do think talk shows or something like learning English from Friends are proper here. Debates are welcome. If it's too old, it's old-fashioned. I don't like it. But there are just some things that never grow old and never die. You'll hate that you didn't find them earlier, and they might have changed your life. Justice: What's The Right Thing To Do? How to learn any language in six months | Chris Lonsdale | TEDxLingnanUniversity It's important to have at least one caption. Auto-generated caption is not recommended. You know why. More videos and channels

Please, help me grow this space, add more videos, discover more channels.
I bet you love YouTube, and you have subscribed a lot of channels, right? Or better, you have created your own channel? Leave a comment below, tell me your favorite educational channels. I'll consider to put it in the sidebar of this site. Yours is better.

    This is the way.

  • How to add a new dictionary to the trove

Dictionariez is a language learning tool that supports a wide variety of languages. As our community grows, we're looking to expand our collection with more dictionaries. You can find and add these resources to your collection through Dictionariez Trove.

But we don't just need dictionaries—we're open to any websites that can improve the learning experience, like Wikipedia or Bing Image Search.

Your contributions are essential to helping us grow. Share your recommendations today and help us make Dictionariez even better!

How to add a new dictionary to your collection

To expand your Dictionariez collection, start by browsing Dictionariez Trove. If you don't find the dictionary you're looking for, you can easily add a new one in two ways:

By posting on pnlpal. By code. By posting on pnlpal

    This is the way.
Create a new topic in the Dictionariez Trove section. Include the JSON code in markdown format within the topic content, and use relevant tags to categorize the dictionary.

Here’s a screenshot showing the creation of a new dictionary called 'Merriam Webster'.

    Screenshot 2024-10-02 202918.png

    By code

On the Dictionariez settings page, open Chrome's developer tool and use the following function:

    addDict( { dictName: 'Google Search', windowUrl: 'https://www.google.com/search?q=<word>', css: '#searchform,#top_nav {display: none;}' } )

Note: The css code is optional and can be used to customize the target website to better fit the app.

Once added, the new dictionary "Google Search" will appear at the end of the dictionaries list of your Dictionariez. Click on it to open and test it out.
